Goodness

This is pretty surprising anyway you slice it. I'm going to link to this story, but reprint most of it here for clarity's sake:

This has to be a first. In its new poll, Fox News asked what may well be the ultimate in jingoistic, rally-around-the-flag questions — and the Democrats came out on top.

If there is an all-out war between the United States and various radical Muslim groups worldwide, who would you rather have in charge — Democrats or Republicans?

Democrats 41%
Republicans 38%
Both the same (not listed) 9%
Don't know (not listed) 12%

I mean, that's exactly right. It's an insane question in the way it's phrased and a TERRIBLE response for the Republican Party.

As they say, good times.

  1. I suppose that it will do absolutely no good to point out that we are in an all-out war with various radical Muslim groups worldwide?

  2. No, Curtis, it won't. Because that's tacitly untrue. We are in a war in Afghanistan with the Taliban, and in Iraq we are at war with Iraqis. Most who are fighting against us for reasons that have nothing to do with religion.

The question Fox News had was so pathetic, because it suggested a world where radical Muslims around the world launched a coordinated jihad against the U.S.A. Which isn't close to the real world.

We wouldn't be in any confrontation with Muslims (or non-Muslims) in Iraq if we hadn't gone in there. We would be done with the war in Afghanistan if we hadn't been so distracted by Iraq...so, the question is moot and helps justify our idiotic foreign policy.

  3. Is it your position that we are only at war with Iraqis in Iraq? Are you arguing that there aren't any al-Qaeda foreign fighters in Iraq? Are you arguing that the Iranians aren't at least supporting and funding resistance efforts?

And are you arguing that the US would have completely crushed the Taliban fighters were it not for the 2003 Iraq invasion? The US can't utterly defeat the Taliban because we can't go after their bases in Pakistan. We could have a million men under arms there, and we'd still be fighting the Taliban because we can't chase them across the border. How can you suppose we'd be victorious by now?

  4. Sigh. No, I'm arguing that we are not fighting across the world in an all-out holy war with Muslims vs...us, whatever the US is. Christian, I guess. And as for the Taliban, I should have said that we could have been successful attacking the Taliban in Afghanistan and reducing their role there - we were essentially almost there, then we pulled out our troops and focus and went to Iraq.
